Sandy Harbutt got the idea for Stone in 1970 when he wrote a script for an episode of The Long Arm . In the low budget film he played Undertaker, a Vietnam war veteran and leader of the GraveDiggers. The film starred Ken Shorter and featured Rebecca Gilling, Bill Hunter and Helen Morse.
Stone became the Aussie cult classic biker movie which still has a following of thousands fans around the world. Stone was released in 1974 and still remains the only true Aussie biker movie to this day.
Sandy will be sorely missed by many as he was viewed as a motor cycle icon in the Australian biker culture. Mancaveidea/Hoodlumclothingcompany has the privilege of bringing to the world STONE GEAR merchandise. I get asked a lot why Sandy used the Z s. He was as at Bathurst bike races and heard a rumble coming up the mountain when they emerged from the darkness he saw they were Zs from that time on he had to have the Kawasakis in his movie. He said the sound was something to behold and thus the Zs cemented their place in history.
